The Housing Stock, and What It Asks of an Electrician

A surf suburb with a National Surfing Reserve out the front and a very ordinary set of Sydney houses behind it.

The old bones are Federation bungalows and double-brick interwar homes from the first subdivisions. Later came the brick walk-ups of the 60s and 70s, then apartment blocks around the Junction and along the beachfront.

Brick, double brick, brick veneer, render. Four different wall types, four different ways of getting a cable where it needs to go.

The fault we find most in the unrenovated end is the same one every time.

No RCDs at all. Older houses and walk-up flats that were never touched simply do not have the safety switches (RCDs) that modern circuits are required to carry. Nothing on the board is watching for a shock.

That is not a small thing on Marine Parade or anywhere else. It is the difference between a nuisance trip and someone getting hurt, and a switchboard upgrade closes it.

McKeon Street is the other half of the picture. The shops, the flats above them and the houses behind them all land on the same run sheet.

Renovated places are a different conversation entirely. Once a house has been through a proper reno, the safety switches are usually there and the questions turn to load instead.

Services That Fit Maroubra's Homes

Everything below is a job we do here regularly, priced in writing before anyone starts:

Switchboard upgrades. The big one. Old fuse carriers come out, RCBOs and clear circuit labels go in, sized properly for the appliances actually plugged in.

Residential electrician. Rewiring, added circuits, extra outlets, fault finding with thermal imaging when a fault will not show itself.

Light installation. Interior LEDs through to security floods and garden runs, fitted with SAL or Beacon Lighting rather than box-store stock.

EV charger installation. Charger, dedicated circuit, and a look at your supply first so you find out before delivery day, not after.

Emergency electrician. No power, hot smells, repeated tripping. Triage happens on the phone with a licensed electrician, immediately.

Level 2 electrician. Supply-side work most electricians cannot legally touch. Think mains into the property, the meter connection itself, and defect rectification.

The Faults Maroubra Homes Report Most

Three faults land on the run sheet more than anything else out here, and all three are old stock meeting modern life:

Rewireable ceramic fuse boards. Interwar and mid-century homes near the Junction very often still run one. Switchboard upgrades replace the lot with modern protection.

Old cable found during a reno. Federation cottages get renovated and units get converted, and both keep turning up cabling that needs a full rewire. That is residential electrician work, and it is better found early.

Boards asked to carry more than they were built for. Add modern loads to an older place near the beach and the switchboard becomes the limit. Switchboard upgrades bring it back to current standards.

Shops, Clubs and Sports Fields

Pacific Square sits on Anzac Parade with a Coles and an Aldi inside it. Heffron Park runs off the same road, carrying the Des Renford Leisure Centre and a spread of sports fields.

Not everything here is a house. Nor is everything we do.

Shops, clubs, strata common property and small commercial sites all get the same licensed team and the same standards. The difference is timing.

A retailer cannot lose lighting mid-trade and a club cannot lose it mid-function, so that work gets booked around their hours rather than ours. Sometimes that means an early start, and occasionally a Sunday.

If you look after a site rather than live in one, ring (02) 9134 9029 and we will quote it properly, in writing, before anything is committed.

Emergency

Emergency Help, Minutes from Maroubra

In a walk-up block, the board you need might not be inside your flat at all.

Tell us that when you ring (02) 9134 9029 and we arrive with the right gear instead of the wrong assumption. Call straight away for:

  • Everything dead at your place, neighbours unaffected
  • A smell like hot plastic near your meter box
  • An outlet browning, buzzing or throwing sparks
  • Breakers that will not stay in once reset
  • Warmth or noise coming out of the board itself

If you can get at it safely, turn it off at the switchboard before anything else. Then ring, and a sparkie stays on the line with you until we arrive.

Why Maroubra Locals Choose a Team from Next Door

Coogee is home turf and this suburb is next door, which means we are already out this way rather than crossing town to reach you.

That matters most on the small jobs. A single outlet is worth our while here, so we will actually come and do it.

Everything else matches what you would get on a full rewire: upfront written pricing, premium Clipsal and Hager gear, every circuit finished to AS/NZS 3000, Certificate of Compliance at handover.

No Station Here, and What That Changes

There is no railway station in this suburb. The tram to the beach stopped running back in 1961, and buses have carried people to the city ever since.

For a resident that is mostly a traffic problem. For us it changes nothing, because a van does not care about a timetable.

It does have one real consequence worth knowing. Plenty of trades quietly price in the trip out here, then knock back anything too small to justify it.

We do not, because this is already the patch we work. A single dead outlet is a real job to us, priced the same honest way as a full board.

How We Work

You ring, someone picks up. A real person answers the phone and takes the details, then we book you in for a time that suits. You get a reminder text the day prior.

We look, then we cost it. Quoting is free, the price lands in writing, and what you approve is locked in even if the job runs longer than we expected.

We do it, and we clean up. Drop sheets down and the place left tidy, premium gear fitted, and a stop-and-explain if we uncover something genuinely unexpected.

We test and certify. Tested before we sign off, Certificate of Compliance issued, photos sent through so you can see how it was left.

Maroubra and the Surrounding Streets We Cover

Home turf is Coogee, and our regular run from there takes in the rest of the eastern beaches. These suburbs each have their own page, written off their own housing:

Common questions

Your Maroubra FAQs

Straight answers to what gets asked most before a job gets booked.

How fast can you get out here?

Most jobs land often same or next day once you ring. Anything sparking, smoking or dead gets treated as urgent and jumps everything else on the run sheet.

Are you actually local, or is that just marketing?

Genuinely local. This suburb is a standing fixture on our weekly run, not a postcode we bolted onto a service map to look bigger.

Are you licensed for work anywhere in NSW?

Yes. We hold NSW Electrical Contractor Licence #452529C and we are Master Electricians Australia members, which covers electrical work anywhere in the state.

Can you work in a block of flats?

Yes. A lot of what we do out here is inside walk-ups, so we are used to a board that lives in a stairwell cupboard, and to squaring things with the manager first.

Could you take on a whole-house rewire?

Yes, and we would rather stage it around your builder than fight them for the same wall. Everything gets tested to AS/NZS 3000 before it is signed off.

If something you installed fails in five years, then what?

Then we come back and fix it at no cost. That is what the lifetime workmanship guarantee means, and the gear itself carries a 12-month product warranty on top.
