The Housing Here, and What It Asks of an Electrician

This is a village wrapped around a narrow, sheltered bay, and the housing sits as tight as the bay is.

Semis, terraces and Federation cottages from the early 1900s make up most of it, with walk-up flats filling the gaps. Brick, double brick and render, nearly all of it.

Two jobs follow from that, and they usually turn up together.

Renovations that open up old wiring. Period semis and cottages around here get worked on constantly. The moment the linings come off, whatever is behind them has to be brought up to current standards, which means rewiring.

Boards that cannot carry the new kitchen. Modernise an old dwelling and you hang appliances on it that it never had. That is when a switchboard upgrade stops being optional and starts holding up the whole renovation.

Eastbourne Avenue and Beach Street are typical of it. Solid masonry, small blocks, neighbours close enough to hear the drill.

We work out the cable route before anything opens up, because in a double-brick semi you rarely get a second go at running one.

Electrical Issues We See Around Clovelly

Two faults account for most of what we are called out to fix here, and both are simply the stock showing its age:

Ceramic fuses still doing the job. The pre-1940 semis and cottages very often kept their original board, fuse wire and all. Modern circuit breakers go in during a switchboard upgrade, usually in the same cupboard.

Circuits with nothing watching them. Houses built before RCDs were a requirement have no safety switch (RCD) on the power or lighting circuits. That is the single cheapest thing to fix, and switchboard upgrades sort it.

Built in One Long Wave, and It Shows

The land here was carved into housing blocks from around 1909, and the tram line that arrived in 1913 is what filled them.

That is why so much of the suburb reads as one long build rather than a patchwork. Whole streets went up inside a couple of decades, to the practices of a couple of decades.

For us it makes the work predictable in a good way. We usually know roughly what is behind the wall before we open it, which keeps quotes tight and days short.

Predictable is not the same as simple. We still test what is actually there rather than what should be.

The tram itself is long gone, pulled up in 1957, and no railway ever replaced it. Carrington Road and the bus routes are how the suburb moves now.

That is worth knowing when you book a tradesman. Plenty of them quietly price the trip out here into the job.

We do not, because we are coming this way regardless.

Services That Fit Clovelly's Homes

Six things get booked on these streets more than anything else. All of them priced in writing first:

Switchboard upgrades. Usually the first real job in a period semi. Premium Clipsal and Hager switchgear goes back into the cupboard the old board came out of.

Residential electrician. Rewires staged around the builder, new kitchen and bathroom circuits, plus the dead outlet nobody else will drive out to look at.

Light installation. LEDs, pendants and dimmers, specified so a low period ceiling ends up lit properly instead of glaring at you.

EV charger installation. Its own circuit, a proper wall unit, and a straight answer about your board before you order the car.

Level 2 electrician. For faults on the supply side: consumer mains, the service line into your property, meter connections. We hold the accreditation for it.

Emergency electrician. Hot plastic, no power, tripping that will not quit. You speak to a licensed electrician before anyone gets in a van.

Why Neighbours in Clovelly Pick Us

Home turf is Coogee, next door, and this suburb is part of our regular run. Being close is the least of it, though.

We are Master Electricians Australia members, licensed in NSW under #452529C, and everything lands to AS/NZS 3000 with a Certificate of Compliance at the end. Same council as home turf, too, which is Randwick City Council.

Upfront written pricing lands before anyone unclips a toolbag. That is what our 600+ five-star reviews are actually rating.

The Pub, the Club and the Shops

The Cloey has been the local for a very long time, and the bowls club sits up in Burrows Park on Ocean Street.

Small commercial is a different animal to a house. A kitchen cannot serve with a dead circuit, and a club cannot run a night on half its lighting.

The licence and the standards do not change. The scheduling does, because we fit around trading hours rather than the other way round.

Shops, clubs, strata blocks, terraces. All of them get a written price first.

Bundock Park sits down beside the beach on the coastal walkway, and the cafes near it keep the same awkward hours as the pub does.

Emergency

Emergency Help, Minutes from Clovelly

Over 70% of the dwellings here are units, semis or terraces, which makes this denser than the national average. A burning smell is rarely only your problem when your circuit runs through a shared wall.

Ring (02) 9134 9029 straight away for:

  • The whole flat dark while next door is fine
  • Any smell of hot plastic anywhere near your board
  • An outlet gone black or brown around its edges
  • Tripping that starts again the moment you reset
  • A meter box that is warm, or humming

Switch the circuit off at the board if you can get to it safely, then call. A licensed electrician will talk you through the next few minutes on the phone.

How We Work

Four steps. The same four, every single time.

  1. Ring us and a real person answers the phone. No call centre, no chatbot. We book you in for a time that suits and text a reminder the day before.

  2. We look at it, then we price it. Quoting is free, there is no travel line item, and the price lands in writing before anything begins.

  3. The work gets done properly. Drop sheets down and the place left tidy, premium gear fitted, and we tell you if we hit something unexpected rather than just billing it.

  4. Tested, then handed over. Everything is tested before we sign off, and you get a Certificate of Compliance and photos of the finished job.

Common questions

Common Clovelly FAQs

Six things people ask before they book. Short answers, no runaround.

How soon could you actually get here?

Most bookings land often same or next day. If something is sparking or burning, say so when you ring and it goes straight to the top of the list.

Do you charge extra to come to Clovelly?

No travel loading, and no charge for the quote. You get the price in writing before we start, and that is exactly what you pay.

Which other suburbs do you work in?

Randwick, Maroubra, Bronte, Kensington and Kingsford, plus our own patch. Each one has a page here written from that suburb's housing, not copied across.

Do you take on unit and strata jobs?

Plenty of the work around here happens inside blocks, which means talking to the body corporate as often as the owner. We price the private side and the shared side separately.

What happens if the work goes wrong later?

You are covered by a lifetime workmanship guarantee and a 12-month product warranty on the gear. We come back and fix it at no cost, and the certificate is emailed to you.

What does a quote cost?

Nothing. We quote on site for free, there is no call-out fee, and you get a fixed written price before we start so there are no surprises on the invoice.
